Also known as "The Jewel of the Blue Ridge" or "The Tahoe of the East," Smith Mountain Lake is 40 miles long, over 20,000 acres and just 30 miles from the City of Roanoke. The lake is formed by both the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers.
The current state record of 53 lbs. 7 oz. was taken in 2000 from our sister lake, Leesville, but prior records were all from Smith Mountain; the last weighing in at 49 lbs. 4 oz. We hope to recapture that record again soon. The restocking program has been very successful over the years producing a lot of fish in the 5-12lb. range.
Smith Mountain Lake also has a variety of other fish, including large and smallmouth bass, white bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, yellow perch and bluegill. Along the banks and in the local hills, we also have some of the finest deer and turkey hunting in Virginia.
Other activities include, of course, water recreation, go-carts, miniature golf, shopping, hiking in the mountains or at the State Park (which is located on the lake) and golfing. Our newest attraction is the D-Day War Memorial 30 minutes north in Bedford and next to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Peaks of Otter. All other amenities that any city would provide are available in Roanoke, Lynchburg, or Danville.
